ICLDC’s Annual Football Tournament
Nightly from 7pm, March 23-27
Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi, UAE

The capital’s leading organisations have pledged to support the seventh annual Play for Life football tournament organised by Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC).

ICLDC confirmed that 16 companies are set to enter the upcoming Play for Life - Football 2014 tournament scheduled from March 23-27 at Zayed Sports City’s Main Stadium.

The teams will be divided into four groups of four and will compete in seven-a-side matches, each of 30 minutes duration, with the final slated for the evening of March 27.

Play for Life is part of ICLDC’s public health awareness campaign, ‘Diabetes-Knowledge-Action’, under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak.

The tournament is part of the multi-faceted campaign which continues to promote a balanced diet and regular exercise as the smart and simple way of achieving a healthy lifestyle.

The Middle East is particularly affected by diabetes and its related complications and recent figures from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) confirm this.

In fact, recently released figures estimate that 18.98 per cent of the UAE population lives with diabetes, placing the country 15th worldwide, while further figures suggest diabetes is a regional problem with three GCC nations featuring in the top ten countries for diabetes prevalence.

Since Play for Life’s football tournament kicked off in 2008, more than 1,400 players and in excess of 10,000 spectators have taken part, helping to spread the ‘healthy lifestyle’ message.
