Salwa Zeidan Gallery has officially confirmed
that His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mubarak Al Nahayan will be inaugurating gallery’s
new space located in “The Collection” by St. Regis Resort on the exclusive
Saadiyat island. Being the very first gallery established in Abu Dhabi almost
20 years ago, this contemporary art gallery is considered today as one of the
most active art spaces in the capital. Symbolically named “New beginnings”,
this exclusive opening with collective exhibition will take place on Thursday,
November 21st 2013 at 8 pm.
Previously located on Al Khaleej Al Arabi road, the gallery’s new space
will occupy more than 200m2 within “The Collection” by St. Regis – a
brand new souk area created to give a competitive edge to the island’s retail
endeavors. “The decision to move was long and difficult, but essential”, said
Gallery’s owner and director Salwa Zeidan. “We had been searching for a spacious
venue with high ceilings, in location that would complement the cultural
atmosphere we are striving to create, and we were very satisfied to find it
within the premises of the St. Regis resort. Everyone in the gallery is very
excited about the grand opening.”
Meanwhile, the gallery has also been preparing for the upcoming Abu Dhabi
Art Fair (November 20 – 23, 2013), where it participates with three exhibition
booths. The Modern and Contemporary booth will feature the latest artworks of
gallery’s selected portfolio artists. Gallery’s artist Fatema Al Mazrouie will
have the solo exhibition within the Signature booth, while the Beyond booth will
feature an installation piece by Hussein Sharif.
The gallery’s new interior is currently in the peak of preparation and it
will soon become home to a large number of sculptures, paintings, photographs
and installations done by both international and region’s finest artists and
most promising emerging talents.
With a variety of collective and solo shows scheduled for this season, Mrs.
Zeidan has high expectations for this new venture and believes the Abu Dhabi
art scene is headed towards a promising future, with several high-scale
projects set to be unveiled in the upcoming months. “Our gallery has always
been a great supporter of Abu Dhabi, and we are delighted to see how far this
city has come in establishing itself as the progressive example for the region.
I believe that it was only natural for us to make this decision of further
expanding our business, thus confirming our commitment towards the cultural
movement that has been created here.”
She concludes: “Our clients have expressed major support regarding our
venture and we are confident that many promising partnerships will be formed
with this transition.”
The opening event in November will simultaneously mark the
beginning of the collective exhibition in the gallery, featuring latest works
of gallery’s selected portfolio artists: paintings by HASSAN SHARIF,
installations by HUSSEIN SHARIF, REZA DERAKSHANI's round canvas, KOUROSH
SALEHI’s video, works on paper by ROSE HUSSEINY and OMAR ZEIDAN, paintings by CHRITCH,
NAZZY BEGLARI and SAURABH NARANG, MOHAMED AHMED IBRAHIM’s installations, MOHAMED
ABUNAGA’s works and many more.
Salwa Zeidan Gallery has been established in 1994 in Abu Dhabi. Reopened
in 2009, it specializes in contemporary art. The gallery represents both
well-established and emerging artists from all around the globe. It provides
artists with space to showcase their work in the Middle East’s capital of art
and culture: Abu Dhabi. It promotes mediums that vary from paintings,
photography and sculptures to installation and performance art. All the
artworks selected by the gallery bare two common traits: minimalistic vision
and sensibility. Every artist and artwork is personally reviewed and selected
by Salwa Zeidan herself – a painter, sculptor and curator with more than 25
years of experience- in order to ensure that every piece carries an emotional
artistic touch rather than commercial and mechanical traits.
